Nickhileswar Targets A Semis Spot In The British Junior Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- The country’s rising young squash star M. Nickhileswar has set his sights on qualifying for the semifinals in the British Junior Open (BJO) that kicks off in Birmingham, England from tomorrow till Jan 7.

The 16-year-old said he had undergone a comprehensive training regime to open his campaign in the Under-17 category of the championship’s first round competition at the Solihull Arden Club, tomorrow.

Nickhileswar who is expected to face Pakistan’s Abdullah Nawaz in the quarterfinals, admitted that the physical condition of the other players would provide a major challenge for him.

“I have trained hard because this year I will be facing players who are bigger and older than me. Therefore, I have worked on my physical fitness to compete against them,” he told Bernama when contacted today.

The player from Penang who is ranked 5/8 for the championships said every match in the BJO will be tough due to the fast-paced action and as such he would have to be alert all the time.

Nickhileswar, making his fifth appearence in the BJO, had finished fourth when competing in the Under-15 category last year but emerged as the champion in the Under-11 category in 2019.

Apart from Nickhileswar, Malaysia are also represented by Aqil Mirza Naim Khairil Fariz and Kreethi Pillay who play in the main draw of the BJO in the Under-17 category.
